What are Ring Sizes?

Ring sizes are a standard measurement used to determine the size of a ring that will fit comfortably on a person's finger. There are several different systems for measuring ring sizes, including the US system, the UK system, the European system, and the Japanese system, among others. It’s important to note that every store can slightly vary with their sizing so here at Diamond Elite we recommend all customers visit instore to get the most accurate measurements.

In the US and Canada, ring sizes are generally measured in whole numbers using a scale that starts at size 3 and goes up to size 13.5. In Australia and the UK, ring sizes are measured using a scale that starts at size J and goes up to size Z1/2. Where the most common ring sizes for women fall between 5-7 or J ½ - N 1/2 .

It's important to note that the size of a person's finger can change based on factors such as body temperature, time of day, body shape and age, so it's a good idea to have your finger measured by a professional before purchasing a ring.

What if you want to keep the engagement ring a secret?

If you want to surprise your partner with a wedding ring and don't know their ring size, there are a few ways to find out without directly asking them. Here are some suggestions:

  1. Borrow one of their rings: You can borrow one of their rings that fits the desired finger, take it to a jeweler, and have them measure the size.
  2. Trace the inside of a ring: You can trace the inside of one of their rings on a piece of paper, measure the tracing, and then give the measurement to a jeweler to determine the size.
  3. Ask someone they trust: You could ask a close friend or family member of your partner if they know their ring size.

It's important to keep in mind that these methods may not provide an exact size, but they can give you a good estimate. If you’re still unsure we always recommend going a size up as it’s easier to make the ring smaller than larger in the future.

Ultimately, it's important to remember that the most important aspect of a wedding ring is the symbol of love and commitment it represents, rather than the perfect fit of the ring itself. The perfect fit can be obtained later by resizing the ring.

What if the ring doesn’t fit?

In the unlikely event that the engagement ring does not fit on the recipients finger, there are several methods that can be used to size an engagement ring, including:

  1. Cutting and resizing: This involves cutting the band of the ring and adding or removing metal to adjust the size. This is typically used for plain bands and is the most accurate method of sizing a ring.
  2. Stretching: This involves using pliers to gently stretch the ring to make it larger. This method is typically used for rings with intricate designs that cannot be cut and resized.
  3. Adding sizing beads: This involves adding small metal beads to the inside of the ring to make it larger. This method is typically used for rings with stones set close to the band.

Tips for the perfect ring

If you get stuck or experience difficulties, you can always visit Diamond Elite or contact us online, and our team of professionals will cater to your needs.

  • A ring should fit snugly; you don't want it to move on the finger, but it should be able to slide over the knuckle.
  • Finger size changes throughout the day. It depends on numerous factors, such as weather, the leading type of activity, etc. Therefore, we recommend measuring your fingers on a average day when you're not feeling bloated or under the weather.
  • The average ring size for women is between 5 and 7 in US metrics,  J-K-L-M-N in AUS metrics (with L being the most popular).
  • Using a string to measure ring size might seem like a good idea, but it can stretch in the process and cause inaccurate measurement as a result.
  • Find a ring she currently wears and measure it against the chart. The ring should fit around the outside of the circle. If it falls between sizes, go one size up. It's always easier to size down than up.
  • If you're having trouble getting a hold of your partner's ring, ask her mother, sister or best friend to assist.
Remember that rings with side stones are harder to resize, so stay as accurate as possible with this type of setting.
